Irritable bowel syndrome also known as IBS, colitis or spastic colon has increased dramatically over the past twenty years. Statistic’s from 2005 reveal that more than one in six people in USA suffer from symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. But it may be even higher than that in USA and Australia, as many sufferers are not medically diagnosed.

The main symptoms can range anywhere from mild to severe and appear at any age. They often start with constipation that can include straining or watery diarrhoea, cramping pains in lower abdomen and pains before or after passing stool.

Muscular contractions in the colon and ileum can be spasmodic, and Xrays or endoscopy reveal no cause. There are actually no medical tests to diagnose IBS.  The debilitating symptoms do make a person feel insecure as diarrhoea can be uncontrollable and unpredictable.

There may also be a psychological contribution to IBS as during times of stress the nerves connected to the bowel are more active causing an increase in sensitivity in the bowel. More often the main contributor to IBS is food sensitivities, and occasionally the symptoms are triggered by bowel infections or parasites. The food sensitivities can also be caused by chemicals used in food production, parasites in the system, over growth of candida or other fungal forms or nasty bacteria in gut.

The homeopathic approach to irritable bowel syndrome is to strengthen the individual’s constitution and reduce the susceptibility, but at the same time address any psychological imbalances or reactions to stress. Homeopathy had a huge range of medicines and tinctures to treat the cause of the condition.

Diet must be considered. The main dietary culprits seem to be wheat and gluten products, and sugary foods. This can also include organic wheat wholegrain wheat and spelt. That means stopping wheat based breads, breakfast cereals and wheat pastas. Fortunately by demand, many gluten free alternatives now exist for our convenience. Gluten free products help most people with irritable bowel as does reducing dairy produce.

If these foods are diligently replaced with healthier and organic alternatives we often see within a few weeks a lessening of symptoms.

Herbal medicine and homeopathy both work well to reduce inflammations, pain and bowel insecurity while healing takes place
